It begins absurdly enough, with a single hen’s egg laid on the wrong side of a hedge. But for Ivan Chtcherbakov, this small grievance festers into a six-year war against his neighbor Gavrilo, costing them their fortune and their dignity. While Ivan’s father pleads for forgiveness from his sickbed, the two men trade lawsuits like blows.
