When old Doctor Ware arrives at the Hatton farm with his valise of dried roots, he finds young Mary Anne fading from a sickness no tansy tea can cure. The neighbors call it a decline, but the doctor recognizes the sharp ache of a suitor who suddenly vanished. Suspecting heartbreak, he sets out to confront the missing young man. But at the Adams farmhouse, he finds something far stranger than a change of heart: a formidable mother guarding a muffled cry for help rising from the cellar.
